You may have already spotted it in the Radio Times, but I've done another of my radio documentaries to be broadcast on some BBC Local Radio stations over New Year.
It's called "The Other Side of the Dial" and looks at the early years of Independent Local Radio in its 40th anniversary year.
The only North West station taking it (so far) is Radio Lancashire at 1800 on Monday December 30.
It includes archive audio of all the opening broadcasts (including Piccadilly) and interviews I've done with John Whitney (founder of the Local Radio Association and the first MD of Capital Radio), Jon Snow (LBC), Dave Cash (Capital), Lord Jimmy Gordon (Clyde), Ed Doolan (BRMB), Roger Day
(Piccadilly), Gillian Reynolds (City), James Whale (Metro), Keith Skues (Hallam), Tony Blackburn (Radio 1), Austin Mitchell MP (Pennine), Mike Reid (210), Andy Wint (Beacon), Tony Stoller (IBA) and Torin Douglas (Campaign magazine).
It also includes things you don't associate with modern day commercial radio. You hear "God Save the Queen", Kenneth McKellar, Franny Scully, the story of how Richard Attenborough's paintings saved Capital Radio, the Radio Clyde prayer, Captain Mainwaring, the Balcombe Street siege, Yellow Pages, and Jon Snow firing the wrong cartridges.
Feel free to spread the word among radio fans.
It will be broadcast at the following times, and can be heard live online, and on "Listen Again" for a week. Other stations may also take it.

Brazilian AM stations about to switch to FM
Hej!!
Tråkigt for MV-DX:are!!
Hälsningar från Brasilien

Hello!
According to the TV news, president Dilma has signed a decree which enables all Brazilian MW/AM stations to switch over to FM. As of January 1, 2014 the stations can apply for switching to FM.
Associação Brasileira de Rádios e Televisão believes that around 90% of the 1784 stations currently broadcasting on MW/AM in Brazil will be switching over to FM. Initially, the stations will be able to broadcast both on AM/MW and FM.
After five years the stations must decide whether to switch to FM permanently or to continue on FM. They may also decide to stay on MW/AM and are allowed to expand their prescence in this band.
Some of the motives for the decree is better audio quality and less interference plus the fact that FM transmissions, contrary to AM/MW radio, can be received on cellular phones.
Tough for AM/MW buffs, indeed!
Greetings fom Brazil,

Time to look for rare LPAM UK stations as some dominants are silent
For listeners in the UK & Europe looking for the low power LPAM stations in the UK, it is worth noting that many student stations are silent for the Summer vacation. This may open up other co-channel opportunities. For example URY 1350kHz in York is off air. Coincidentally Kingstown Radio 1350 Hull is silent again (blank carrier only atthe moment) so this may allow you to catch other stations around the UK on this channel. Greece radio update
I wrote this to WRTH Facebook:
Again tonight 729 carries Flash 96.
1260, 1404 is // with 9420 now at 2030, earlier local px.
1008, 1278, 1314, 1512 own prgr.
666, 792, 981, 1179 off.
I suppose Flash 96 on 729 kHz could be regarded as a new station, because legally ERA doesn't exist this week.

Radio Waddenzee closing down
The Dutch commercial radiostation Radio Waddenzee, broadcasting on 1602 kHz medium wave from an old lightvessel near Harlingen will stop broadcasting on the 29th of June. The station announced that on their website. Problem is, they don't have enough advertisers. Because Radio Waddenzee has a 1 KW transmitter, they can be heard in the northern part of the Netherlands only. And in the Netherlands , apart from some freaks, nobody listens to mediumwave anymore.
